Understanding Fats and carbohydrates and their role in a healthy diet

Posted in Nutrition Hall by admin on the March 9th, 2008

In recent times it would give the impression that fats and carbohydrates have both gotten a bad rap. First it was fat that was the culprit in all dietary ills, and low fat diets were all the rage. Then the two switched places, with carbohydrates being the bad guys and fat reigning supreme.

Both fats and carbohydrates play an important role in nutrition, and both are vital to a healthy diet. It would be impossible and unwise to remove all fat from the diet, since fat is important for the production of energy, and for carrying valuable fat soluble vitamins like vitamin D, vitamin E and vitamin K, throughout the body. In addition, fat plays a very important role in regulating various bodily functions.

Even though some fat is essential to a healthy body, too much fat can be harmful. Excessive levels of dietary fats have been implicated in heart disease, stroke, high cholesterol levels and even some cancers. Most nutritionists suggest limiting daily fat intake to less than 20% of calories, although taking that level lower than 10% is not recommended.

The type and amount of fat in the diet makes all the difference. A diet high in saturated fats, trans fats and cholesterol has been associated with a variety of ills, including heart disease, stroke and other related diseases. In addition, many long-term chronic problems, such as obesity, are associated with high levels of dietary fats.

Food labels do make the complex process of choosing the right fats somewhat easier. For instance, trans fats will be listed on the ingredient list of foods that include them. In general, trans fats are found mainly in processed foods. When limiting your daily intake of fat and cholesterol, it is good to have an understanding of nutritional labels. This government mandated labels could be a huge help to those who take the time to read and be aware of them.

Carbohydrates are an important part of a healthy diet as well, and carbs are necessary for providing energy and many vital nutrients. Carbohydrates are found in fruits and vegetables, in grains and in milk and dairy products. It is important to choose carbohydrates carefully, however, since not all are equally healthy.

Keeping saturated fats and trans fats to a minimum is important to a healthy diet. Trans fats, which are solid at room temperature, are most often found in highly processed foods like cookies, cakes and other baked goods. In addition, trans fats are often found in fried foods and in salty snacks like potato chips. While these foods are fine in moderation, it is best to avoid large quantities of such snacks.

As with many products, less is often more when it comes to choosing foods rich in carbohydrates. For example, less refined whole grain bread is generally more nutritious than white bread, which has gone through a greater amount of refining. That is because the refining process tends to decrease nutrient content over time.

Of course, there are some elements in the diet that should be limited. Two of these elements are sugar and salt. Most Americans consume too much salt and sugar, and this has led to epidemics of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and other ills. Limiting sugar and salt, while choosing good fats and unrefined carbohydrates, is a great way to make the most of the nutritional value of the foods you eat.

There’s a lot to understand about Fats and carbohydrates. We were able to provide you with some of the facts above, but there is still plenty more to write about in subsequent articles.

Steroid Stars

Posted in Nutrition Hall by admin on the March 2nd, 2008

A long time ago, in the country far, far away, a young boy decided he wanted to change his stars for good. He decided that bodybuilding would be his ticket to the top and starts pumping iron. He quickly became successful, but that was partially due to the fact that bodybuilding was the least popular sport in his country at the time. He continued to win other prizes all over Europe, but realized that he could only succeed completely if he went to U.S. and win it there.

Upon arriving to U.S. our hero was surprised to learn that his American Competitors were leaner and more graceful. On his first American Mr. Universe he came in second and was completely disappointed. His thoughts at the moment were: “I’m away from home… In America, and I’m a loser” a day later he decided: “I’m going to pay them back; I’m going to show them who is really the best!”. He succeeded and became a 7 time Mr. Olympia, a successful actor, and now holds an important political function.

The question here is how one can improve so much over a short period of time. Most bodybuilders know that after working out for a long time one hits a wall where he can’t improve any more - naturally that is. At this point bodybuilders have only two options; to remain as they are or to gain more using steroids. As our man was working really hard (5-7 times per week, was on a constant diet…) for 8 years we can assume he has already hit the wall at that point.

It is obvious that his first American Mr. Universe competition has influenced him much. As can be observed from his statement he was strongly psychologically affected. Furthermore one can discern, by observing his pictures of that era that he suddenly became bulkier. From this we can conclude that he probably did start using Steroids at that point. To discern weather he was taking Deca or some kind of Testosterone mix is not really important for this article but it is obvious that they were readily available at that time.

The main problem at this point is not the sole fact that our hero was using steroids; the problem is that he would not give a clear statement weather he used them or not. When asked by a reporter if he ever used Steroids in his competition years he would answer: “We did a lot of experimenting at that time”. What kind of answer is that? As Steroids weren’t illegal at the time when he supposedly used them he couldn’t be prosecuted even if he admitted that. But instead of proving that he is a bodybuilder, doing something for bodybuilding, he deiced to rather be a politician and behave as one - be completely indecisive about any issue that concerns him.

Today steroids have an extremely bad reputation. They are equaled to hard drugs and when ordinary people hear that word they immediately think of “criminal!” or “drug addict”. The fact that Steroids in general are basically products of human body and completely different than drugs is not really important, nor it is known. In such times a person who owns a part of his success to Steroids and has the power to help improve the overall image should do so. I don’t expect the man to say anything like “Kids, use Steroids, they’re god for you….”. But he sure as hell could help de-criminalize their use and possession in small amounts.

Childhood Epidemic Rises 6,000% What Can Be Learned About Autism?

Posted in Nutrition Hall by admin on the December 3rd, 2007

The latest tallies show that over three million people in North America alone carry some type of autism diagnosis. With this increase the biggest question people are asking is why. Over 20 years ago the incidence was estimated to be 1 in 10,000. Now it’s a whopping 1 in 166 according to the U.S. Center for Disease control and is still expected to rise. With the life long care of someone with autism costing approximately 2.2 million per person according to the MIND Institute, we need to start committing proper resources to early intervention now to enable this population to lead fulfilling and productive lives as well as contribute to society

The frustrating point in the above scenario is the lack of interest and resources allocated through government and other agencies towards a solution. This includes actively determining the cause and implementing adequate research towards curative and helpful measures. The US Government will happily spend 1.9 billion dollars for a single Trident nuclear submarine in a fleet of around fifty, yet is only spending 66 million on the entire special education area, which includes special teachers, training and proper equipment and supports.

While hosting an autism conference in Hawaii last month I received a call from a grandmother asking if I could help her thirteen-year-old autistic grandson who was still in diapers. This just shouldn’t be happening in this day and age. Whether there is a cure for autism or not, there are programs and interventions that help all children with autism grow up to be productive community citizens especially through early intervention practices as mentioned earlier. This can happen when parents put their own egos aside and recognize very early that their child has autism, accept the diagnosis and get the treatment the child deserves allowing them to use their inborn strengths and talents to live to their fullest.

Methodologies also need to be more visible and understood. Yes there are successful ways to approach autism like Applied Behavioral Analysis, Greenspan, Daily Life Therapy, Miller Method, the SCERTS method and Relationship Development Intervention which may all sound Greek to some, however, most parents just hear of one and go with it. This could be due to the nature of the beast so to speak, in that many parents of children with autism even show signs of autism themselves such as structured, literal thinking. This forces them to have limited beliefs and be less willing to consider other options in a more abstract manner. Many of these methodologies and belief systems have become rigid and unchanging even though many more options are now available and even more are on the horizon.

As to the cause, many speculate that mercury in addition to other heavy metals could be a strong culprit though the proof is not in the pudding yet. Books like “Evidence Of Harm” by David Kirby, a New York Times writer clearly organizes all the facts for others to draw their own conclusion surrounding the issues around immunizations. Perhaps it’s in the dental amalgams, the fish we eat or other environmental surroundings.

Then still others are pointing to the gene pool saying it is passed on from one generation to the next. I know in my case, I believe my Aeronautical Engineer father has a high functioning form of autism and I grew up thinking he was “normal”. I was therefore attracted to someone who also has many symptoms of autism such as the lack of social skills in certain situations, an egocentric focus, and perseveration (doing the same thing over and over again), especially when it comes to working 7 days a week 12 hour days. And then, there’s me. The more I learn about autism, the more I certainly can see signs in myself.

The best, most proven hope of helping children with autism to lead fulfilling and productive lives I know of, is early intervention. Also, many experience reduced symptoms in their children with autism when gluten and casein are removed or reduced from their diets. Other dietary strategies are being successfully implemented such as a modified Atkins type diet or even sugar and milk free diets. Even if it isn’t perfect, it’s a step in the right direction. Others are having luck by adding vitamins, minerals and glyconutrients back into their systems. Glyconutrients are the sixteen essential sugars missing from our diets due to the poor cultivation processes with our natural fruits and vegetables.

Our Sherwood Park, Alberta based firm, Autism Today is Western Canada’s leading provider of autism conferences. Parents, teachers and professionals can go to: www.keystotreasures.com to learn about our upcoming “Keys To The Treasure Chest” conferences and workshops. Upcoming speakers include: Dr. Lori Ernsperger and Nick Martin, March 2005, Stephen Shore, June 2005, Dr. Steven Gutstein, October 2005, and Dr. Temple Grandin, Dec 2005. Autism Today also hosts online education and Tele-classes as well as a broad selection of books, videos and other learning material.

To wrap up, more studies need to be in place to prove the validity of certain hopeful interventions. Parents need to know what options are available to them instead of hopping on the first methodology train that comes along. Through autismtoday.com we are implementing two such programs. The first is an unbiased study for glyconutrients in a predetermined group of children with autism. The second part of the effort involves devoting a portion of our site, which will be geared to offering a way for parents to sample some different methodologies for their children before deciding on a particular approach of treatment for their child.

Karen Simmons, known to many as “The Autism Lady” is the mother of six, one of which as autism, author of “Little Rainman”, “The Autism Experience”, “Artism”, “Surrounded By Miracle’s and “Peace of Mind for Autism” (CD). She has been featured in local media as well as Woman’s World Magazine, CBC Radio, The Donna Seebo Show and The Vicki Gabreau Show. Also she is the CEO and founder of Autism Today Online Magazine at http://www.autismtoday.com, which is host to the top autism experts in the field today.

Dietary Guidelines For Adults 2

Posted in Nutrition Hall by admin on the November 12th, 2007

Dietary guidelines for adults 2 is, naturally, a follow up to article 1, and focuses on what foods constitute a good diet where article 1 focused upon why we need a good diet. My approach is that food should be fun because most health food aficionados that I know don’t seem to smile too often and therefore I don’t hold them up as good examples. Eating is a major part of life and life should be fun; if we only get one life what’s the point in being miserable? The challenge for healthy eating is to make healthy food fun to eat and reward yourself occasionally with a treat and to heck with the diet.

We need to eat fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, dairy products and drink plenty of water to have a perfect diet. We also have to accept that certain people have allergies. The most common allergies are dairy products and nuts. Just because you have an allergy you shouldn’t use it as an excuse not to eat a healthy diet; if you can’t eat nuts eat more fruit or vegetables to compensate. Using a little common sense will overcome all perceived obstacles. Once you have a diet based upon healthy foods you can add a few luxuries like chocolate and ice cream providing it is within your daily calorie allowance.

A healthy breakfast is cereal, or oatmeal (porridge) with fresh fruit and a glass of milk. If you are really rushed for time a fresh fruit smoothie is great. Alternatively a couple of slices of toasted whole-grain bread. Do away with common white bread it acts like glue in your intestines and creates digestive problems. If you take toast it is always sensible to eat at least one piece of fresh fruit.

If you feel like a snack mid-morning eat a few nuts, a raw carrot or a piece of fruit.

Lunch should consist of a sandwich made with whole-grain bread, a piece of fruit and some green salad leaves. - Common question: “Should I add salad dressing?” - Why not. If you like salad dressing use it or the food becomes boring but use it in moderation.

Afternoon snack – same as morning snack.

Dinner should have meat or fish; red meat is OK in reasonable servings about three times each week. It must have vegetables including peas or beans and if you can utilize fresh fruit for dessert that is even better. Berries are especially healthy and tasty.

To summarize you must eat seven servings of fruit and/or vegetables every day. This is an absolute minimum requirement for a healthy body. Frozen is fine if you are unsure of the freshness of vegetables or fruit because it is snap frozen when fresh and retains the nutrients. Older fruit and vegetables lose nutrient value.

There is much to play with in this diet and the challenge is to make it fun when mixed with some of your favorites.

Do you bosu with a bosu balance ball?

Posted in Sports & More, Nutrition Hall, School of Health, Be Fit Now by admin on the September 3rd, 2007

What the freak is a Bosu? A Bosu is a fitness ball. And it is great! It is called a Bosu Ball. Essentially it is half a ball. But because it has a base you can use it in more ways than an actual ball. I flip it over and stand on the bottom side while doing curls. Or, I’ll do knee bends on it. I’ll put it under my back and do leg lifts with it.

There is no end to what yu can do with a Bosu Ball. Try it! Click Here to buy one.

Do you think this study on glutamine is garbage or the real deal?

Posted in Nutrition Hall, School of Health, Be Fit Now by admin on the August 23rd, 2007

So what do you guys think of the supplement Glutamine? Most body builders swear by it. They say that the combination of whey protein and extra gltamine really helps with recovery and growth. I have tried it myself and I do notice something, but it could be my imagination. I’ve used Champion Nutrition Glutamine, But, I found an article on a fitness blog that states that the latest research on glutamine shows that it doesn’t work.

Still, research always seems to be contradictory. This is one study and there seems to be so much written out there about how glutamine can really benefit the body builder. My guess is that they probably didn’t sample people who train hard, just people who perhaps are average. So, I’m going to keep using it. Anyhow, any thoughts?

Breast Cancer And The Benefits Of Liquid Kelp.

Posted in Nutrition Hall by admin on the July 16th, 2007

A news story on kelp health benefits from the International seaweed symposium declared “In all patients there followed a dramatic drop in incidence of the common cold, and flu virus resulting in a very favourable health benefit” from ingesting liquid kelp. Subjects who already had the virus, found the strength and length of their sickness was cut down to the point that the irritation was greatly reduced by the health benefits of liquid kelp.

A range of mineral content will  fortify osseous tissue, teeth and nails and is an anti-ageing revitalizer, providing more elasticity for your face and body. A wonderful act of Nature has provided the amazing health benefits of Liquid Kelp we have now. Yet additional kelp health benefits come from distilling these essential minerals extracted from Natures Ocean Grass Digitata Laminaria, also known as Sea Kelp. This extraction method releases vitamins & minerals from unavailable, inorganic essences into natural minerals which can be assimilated easily providing a definite health benefit.

Certification of these Kelp Health Benefits are derived from:

A- The Journal of Nutrition Feb 2005

2- Wellness and Beauty Secrets, Pyramid 1970

Studies have shown that Breast Cancer is one of a number of maladies the health benefits of kelp therapy have proven to be successful with.  Since the 1920’s Breast Cancer death rates have barely changed.   Surgical procedures, chemotherapy, mammography, and radiotherapy haven’t changed the rate of death from Breast Cancer, only fattened the wallets of researchers, doctors and drug companies 85 percent of adult females that get breast cancer will die from causes directly interrelated to breast cancer. (Author: Doctor. David Derry)

Studies are already afoot regarding the affect of natural iodine from kelp upon cancer prevention and reduction - many are showing very promising health benefits of natural liquid kelp. As breast cancer rates nationwide continue to skyrocket, more people are interested in early intervention or prevention. Dr. Denys theories of kelp health benefits, based on extensive critical review of published medical literature in combination with his experience as a clinician, are not his alone.

Dr. Derry suggests sustaining the bodys natural immune system with small daily doses of naturally ocurring iodine and improving metabolic health by normalizing proper thyroid levels, taking advantage of natures Kelp Health Benefits.

Realizing that a diet rich in kelp might lessen the danger of estrogen-dependent diseases like Breast Cancer, health researchers at UCLA Berkeley, demanded a significant increase in scientific research into kelp health benefits.
