Pros and Cons Of Inversion Tables

Posted in Medical Hall, Media Portal by admin on the September 15th, 2008

If you have back pain and want to try something that will make it feel better, test a back pain inversion table. The table is easy to use and can be purchased for use at home. Basically it’s a tilting table. You lie on it with your feet under a support so you don’t slide off. Then you tilt the table as far as you want. You don’t actually hang upside down, but it will tilt quite a ways.

Inversion tables also stimulate circulation within the circulatory system opposing what it would normally assist, and assisting what it would normally oppose, while upright. These tables are also an incredible way to do abdominal and stretching exercises such as sit ups, crunches, spinal flexors, side flexors and extensors. Inversion tables go back to the times of ancient Greece and its great age. Hippocrates started using inversion tables in the time of ancient Greece. Inversion tables function by strapping the feet into a pair of boots attached to the table, and then the body is inverted and suspended. The machines provide support to the back while inverted, as the whole table rotates on the hinges.
The principle behind the table is the same principle as traction. The point is to use something to pull the vertebrae in the back apart. When you’re in traction, some kind of equipment is used to apply tension to your spine. The inversion tables uses gravity. The table only provides temporary relief though. It’s not a long term solution to back pain. But if it helps for even a little while, it’s worth a try if you have chronic or remit tent pain.

Plastic Surgery After Weight Loss

Posted in Medical Hall by admin on the May 13th, 2008

Losing a significant amount of weight can be a great source of joy but more often than not, it is accompanied with loose skin hanging from the arms, thighs and abdomen. The abdomen especially develops rolls of excessive skin. The sudden removal of fat tissues below the skin doesn’t give the skin time to shrink to the size of the underlying musculature. Also, if weight loss occurs late in life, the earlier suppleness of the epidermis (upper layer of the skin) is by this time, lost and hence, excess skin is left behind. Sometimes, if a person has been overweight for a long time, the skin grows with the weight and does not simply “snap back” when the weight is lost.

Plastic and reconstructive surgery can aid patients who have extra skin issues. Plastic surgery is the option most commonly exercised by patients that want to get rid of embarrassing loose and hanging excess skin. Among the many surgeries available to correct post-weight loss excess skin, surgeons increasingly advocate the following: Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), which tightens loose skin about the abdomen, thigh lift for the extra flesh of the upper legs and breast lift surgery for sagging bust line. These three surgeries, according to plastic surgeons, can make the most significant changes in the condition of patients and should be undertaken following weight loss.

There are other surgeries that can be done following these three main ones. These include upper arm lift, medial thigh lift, gynecomastia (in males), lower body lift, liposuction and facelift. A patient should ideally discuss surgical options with the surgeon concerned that would optimize the appearance of the patient following the surgery. With increasingly affordable charges, the path towards utopia in relation to desired appearance has been smoothened for the patient. However, it is important to find out whether the plastic surgery procedures are covered by your medical insurance policies before taking a decision.

Do you Want to be Thinner, Healthy and Fit?

Posted in Medical Hall by admin on the May 3rd, 2008

While we offer an effective and natural fat loss product - the Jen Fe Next Fat Loss Patch and the Power Patch,* we also know that without a commitment from you to bring about some lifestyle changes, you won’t reach optimal fat loss. There is no product in the world that can produce fat loss while we are eating and drinking excessively, and moving only slowly from couch to car to office chair. We need a program of sensible diet and exercise that will support the products we utilize to help our weight loss.
Here’s what to eat:
1. Lots of vegetables and fruits
2. Increase healthy protein intake. This is how you build lean muscle tissue, which in turn speeds up your metabolism. Examples are fish, lean meats, low-fat dairy products, beans, and soy products.
3. Fiber-Rich foods. They will fill up and they make they are satisfying. In this category are: peas, beans, bran cereals, potato skins, nuts and seeds, oatmeal, bulger wheat, 100% whole wheat baked goods, fruits and vegetables.
4. Minerals. Calcium and other minerals are you “secret weapons” against body fat. They are found in low-fat dairy products, small or canned fish, soy tofu, green vegetables, nuts, seeds, bran cereals, and calcium fortified orange juice, and avoid processed, salt-loaded foods.
5. Eat fish and beneficial fats. Omega-3 unsaturated fatty acid in some fish, oils and nuts is a good fat. Eat moderate amounts of salmon, herring, mackerel, sardines and other oily fish. Soybeans, nuts, pumpkin seed are also excellent sources for Omega-3.
6. Reduce harmful fats - saturated and trans fats. These are not only high in calories; they are also loaded with harmful fatty acids that cause disease.
7. Always eat an adequate breakfast for several reasons: it will speed up your metabolism earlier in the day and when you skip breakfast, it makes it harder to control your appetite later in the day.

8. Cut back or eliminate alcohol. It is high in non-filling calories. Ideal consumption is one glass of beer or wine a day.
9. Stay away from junk carbohydrates - sugar and white flour are diet killers in all but the smallest amounts.
10. Gradually reduce your calorie intake because extreme and sudden dieting causes your body to conserve, not burn calories, and it slows fat loss.
11. Snack instead of eating large meals - larger, higher calorie meals tend to be stored as fat, instead of burned for energy. Ideally, you should eat five or six smaller, nutritious snacks each day instead of large meals.
12. Move! You must exercise to build lean tissue that burns fat. As little as two to three hours per week of brisk walking at minimum, and you will notice a major impact on your weight loss.
13. Reduce stress. It produces adverse fat-producing chemistry in your body. Try warm baths, meditation, deep breathing, stretching, massage, prayer and rest.
14. Get outside into the sunshine at lest 20 minutes per day - the vitamin D you get from sunshine works with calcium for health and body fat control.

Cancer & Caregivers

Posted in Medical Hall by admin on the April 26th, 2008

Cancer & Caregivers; Part of a series of Positive Attitudes for Cancer.

Battling Cancer is an individual journey that takes all of heaven and earth to combat.

Choose your caregivers well:

Your Caregiver walks a fine line between reality, support cheerleader, hand holder, master “hugger” and “inspiration machine”, and friend, who must give that medicine, drives you to treatment, and fusses at you to keep you on track for your healing journey.

Your Cancer caregiver is your primary filter and monitor of your visitors, both family and friends. They should only allow POSITIVE PEOPLE!!! and ONLY people who are emotionally nourishing for you.

YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT!

They should encourage you to be surrounded by individuals who treat as if you are living and expect you to have a future. No “what if’ers,’ no “maybe that won’t work”, or “oh you poor dear”, or any others who say negative things.

If ANYONE ever says to you “before you were living with cancer, now you’re dying with cancer.”

Remove them from your life until they can be respectful and empathetic! Not only are they unable to determine your death, they are also unkind to make a remark like this.

If they say to you, “I was just making a realistic statement so you won’t be in denial and we can address your will, funeral plans, and future provisions.” FORGET THAT justification!!!!! NO ONE who truly cares about your heart and soul, would ever say anything like that.

Do not be so needy for attention, that you allow yourself to be the “victim” of comments that are TOTALLY inappropriate!! no matter how sick you are. As long as there is breath in your body, you have the right to be treated with respect and dignity, and as if you are going to live!!!

Family members as Caregivers:

If you have spent your life helping others, and enabling them, it’s time to stop that energy drain. This does NOT mean that you do not love them anymore. It means that you care enough about yourself to take care of you FIRST, so that you can be around in the future to help them.

Non-healing: 1. “But he’s my brother and he just drinks a little too much, and he wants to come visit”….. His energy will drain you!!! Visit with him when you are healed!

2. At this time, YOU do NOT need to hear their problems. They need to support you!

Friends as Caregivers:

There are several kinds of friends during this time in your life.
The talkers:

They call to see how you are, listen for a short period of time and then spend hours telling you about their life. They ask if they can do anything for you. When you mention that you need a ride to chemo on Thursdays, their answer is, “I’d love to take you, but I have book club.” Do not be discouraged. This person is interested enough to call, but NOT authentic about truly helping you or they would have taken you to chemo…….. There will be more book clubs, this is your battle with a disease! Thank them for calling, and get off the phone.

You are not THAT needy to have to talk with someone who won’t really be there for you!

The Doers:

These are the friends that pick you up, sit through, and bring you home after chemo, and probably add fresh flowers to your home. Be thankful. They encourage you to live with every dinner invitation, movie, or “let’s go to” invitation. GO! Do not feel like you are “putting them out”, “being a bother”, or whatever. When you are well, YOU can DO for them!!!!! They are your Earth Angels.

Being the Caregiver for someone battling cancer, and going through cancer treatment is a job that requires everything you can muster to handle your work and all of your coping skills.

Advice for the Cancer Caregiver:

1. Treat your Cancer client as if they are going to live. DO NOT treat them as if it’s just a matter of time. Always speak of their “experience” NEVER a disease.

2. You will most likely be caught up in the overwhelming environment of caregiving, and handling every life and medical detail and decision.
Try to look at the patient and all of their circumstances as if they are in a healing situation, and in a positive manner. Don’t be a Pollyanna, but try to put a positive spin on everything that you can.

3. Although your patient has “determination to live”, that determination needs to be rooted in positive. Positive energy raises their body’s physical energy frequency which fights their disease.

4. Creating a positive uplifting environment:

a. Dress in happy colors.

b. Help create a environmentally pleasant and visually happy care area. Little touches mean a lot!

c. Only allow positive people around your patient. EXPLAIN why the negative folks need to stay away, and help keep them away.

d. Be very conscious of how YOUR energy can effect the “patient.”
If you view the patient in a “sick” condition, you are sending negative energy their way!

If you have a negative attitude, or irritable responses, you generate negative energy which lowers your patient’s physical body frequency and DOES NOT help heal the disease. Your energy field will affect your patient.

e. Keep your energy field clean. Your patient is like a sponge and absorbs and interacts with all the energy surrounding them and that they are exposed to.

5. Contributing Life force energy thru Love:

On numerous occasions, family and friends have asked how they can contribute positive energy to the “patient.” [An educational note: The hand that you write with is your energy sending hand. The other hand is your energy input receiving hand.] So follow the directions below according to whether you are right or left handed.

Take your left receiving hand and place it on your heart, and take your right sending hand to hold the patient’s left hand (receiving hand). Then say to the patient, “I send you the love from my Heart and it’s healing life force energy to use as you so choose.”
You then become an “energizer” bunny for the patient thru your love for them.

Filthy, Clean or Antiseptic

Posted in Medical Hall by admin on the March 30th, 2008

When I was a kid, my grandfather bought me a bicycle. I was the envy of all of my friends. You see, it was no ordinary bicycle. I was the proud owner of a Renegade. I was the only kid I knew that had a gearshift with 3 speeds on the handlebars and hand brakes. (In those days the only variance in speed depended on your pedaling ability and you back pedaled to stop.)

What was best about my bike was that I had a royal purple sparkle banana seat with a sissy bar. I was hot stuff! Nowhere in my high tech package of thrills, chills and spills was the hint of elbow pads, kneepads or a helmet. There were more than a few times, as I was sailing through the handlebars, that I could have used a little extra padding.

Don’t get me wrong. The advent of safety gear for children on bicycles has prevented many deaths and severe head injuries. But, I just have to chuckle when I see a gang of kids looking like the Michelin Man on his way to a hockey game. Times have changed. The world is a dangerous place and it always has been. The difference is that we spend more resources and effort in an attempt to deconstruct the environment instead of being a part of it.

At the turn of the century, the most common cause of death was infection. A small inconsequential cut or scrape could morph into a life threatening staph infection. We no longer have to concern ourselves with the staphylococcus that stalked our progenitors. It doesn’t hang out with us anymore because we developed technology to eradicate it. There is a cost for our success.

In our zeal to eradicate the not so nice things in our lives, we have created “super” not so nice things. It appears not to be enough for us to manage our challenges. It seems that if we cannot be the all powerful conquering heroes, we are not satisfied. As a result, that turn of the century staph infection is gone. It has been replaced by a resistant strain of staph infection that scares the life out of every medical professional that has seen it. Like all wars, it is an ever-escalating situation.

As I sit here at the computer, I am not arguing anti-technology. I am advocating moderation, management and forward thinking. Before we just kill, perhaps it would be better to create a situation that does not force a mutation. “Better” could be redefined as significantly diminishes the threat to human lives.

Recent studies indicate that the use of antibacterial detergents being used in so many household products is having two unanticipated effects:

1.Children, because of less exposure to pathogens, are not developing potent immune systems.

2. We are forcing the evolution of “super germs.”

In short (I know it’s a little late for that), maybe it is better to accept ourselves as an integral part of the natural world and learn to manage its challenges.

Methods of Treating Diseases by Color

Posted in Medical Hall by admin on the March 23rd, 2008

There are two methods of treating diseases by colour:

1. By the application of light through different coloured glasses; and

2. By external or internal use of colour-charged water.

In the first method, sheets of glass, 30 cms. X 36 cms. of the required colours are needed. These are placed at the window frames or any other convenient place in such a way that the sun’s rays can pass through them and fall directly on the patient’s body. The usual duration of the colour treatment is 30 minutes. In case of local application, a pane of glass can be placed in front of the diseased part so that the light passing through the glass falls on the afflicted area. At night lanterns can be used for the purpose. A single lantern can have glass panes of four different colours and the required colour can be focused on the patient or the affected
parts.

In the second method, coloured bottles are needed. These bottles should be cleaned and
filled up to three-fourths level with fresh well water, distilled water or rain water. The
bottles should be corked and then placed in bright sunlight for three to four hours. After
this exposure, the water is said to acquire medicinal properties and this colour-charged
water can be used both internally and for external applications. Wounds and ulcers can
be washed with this water and it can also be used to massage the affected parts or
applied as compress on them. For internal use, an adult can take 30 ml. of
colour-charged water as a single dose. The dose can be repeated as required.

The Fine Art of Smudging

Posted in Medical Hall by admin on the March 17th, 2008

An Aboriginal Canadian friend of mine who teaches at the Whispering Lodge in Toronto was explaining to me how physical or emotional healing cannot take place until the person is cleansed of any of the following conditions:

1) Emotional conditions such as resentment, bitterness, envy, jealousy and guilt

2) Negative thoughts about others or one’s past or future

3) Negative emotions such as grief, hatred, desire

4) Bad or evil spirits

5) Attachments or negative energy sent to us from other people

In most Aboriginal traditions, a sweat lodge, basically a tent or teepee or cave filled with smoke and heat, is used to remedy the sick person of these conditions. In ancient Rome, buildings called purgatoriums were used for the same purpose. These smoke and heat filled places were considered sacred spaces in which the spirits or God could lift negative entities and energies from an individual without interference with others. Many indigenous cultures throughout the world use burning herbs, plants and resins to accomplish the same purpose. In some cultures the smoke is taken into one’s hands and rubbed over the body to blacken it. This is where the modern day practice got its nickname — smudging.

Below is a list of common herb, plants, grasses and resins that are commonly used in smudging ceremonies. You can light these substances yourself and carry a bundle of the substance around your home in a counter-clockwise circle to cleanse your space. I highly recommend cleansing the body outside, however, as I have found that sage can burn very fast and create a lot of rapid whirling smoke that easily sets off the fire alarm.

Sage Sprigs - the most common substance used for cleansing is sage. The word sage comes from the Latin word Salvia which means, “to heal.” There are also varieties of sage, which are from the Artemisia family of plants. This includes mugwort which s used for cleansing and protection. White sage is used for cleansing and protection. Combining branches of pine and white sages together and burning them is used to attract prosperity.

Cedar and Juniper branches - These evergreen boughs have historically been used to help cleanse, purify and protect ones belongings. Sometimes brooms are made from them to use the smoke “sweep” to cleanse a home during a house blessing.

Sweetgrass - This musty smelling grass is used to drive out bad influences and draw good influences into the home. It is often used after a prayer or ritual to “hold” the magic” in its place.

Copal - this aromatic plant resin is mainly used in South American rituals. The touch of the strongly scented smoke from burning copal is thought to cleanse and purify any object or person.

Frankincense and Myrrh - these “biblical” resins are used in Africa, the Middle East and Europe for ceremonies and rituals. Burned together they are thought to balance yin and yang, or the masculine and feminine energies in a place or dwelling. Either is thought to draw blessings into a home.

Tobacco - Tobacco is burned to float prayers upwards to the Creator where they will be heard and answered. Burning a tobacco along with sage, cedar or sweet grass is thought to enhance the magical intentions of the smudge.

Smudges and resins can be bought commercially from occult, new age and gift shops. I usually put the branches, plants or resins in the bowl and blacken my hands and face with it. While doing this I pray for protection, purification and blessings from above. If healing another person or purifying a room I will sometimes use a feather or a branch to waft the smoke in the desired direction.

Smudging is not all hooey and voodoo. The practice is also thought to created negative ions in the air that remove static and create a positive atmosphere. Not only do people usually feel good afterwards, it also creates a space for the free flowing of positive energies and prayers.

Vinegar Remedies - Colonizing Mars and Helping Debased Taste Buds?

Posted in Medical Hall by admin on the March 3rd, 2008

I was reviewing an ebook on vinegar remedies and uses recently, and came across some surprising assertions. Despite the ebook author claiming that vinegar was not a cure all, the list of complaints vinegar supposedly fixed was astounding. Almost as astounding as the rationale behind using vinegar to fix said complaints.

Apart from the evils of satisfying one’s ‘debased’ taste buds over nourishing the body - which is apparently the cause of all of modern man’s ills. The author suggest we start looking to ‘natural resources’ that have been used in the days before Christ. Apparently that was a bit of a turning point nutritionally.

Anyway, sunshine, water and air aside, its all herbs, honey, and homebrews. These are the antidote to the ‘unnatural chemical compounds’ that are plaguing us. Hmmm - that must be why we our ancestors lived about double the life span that we do. Oh, I’m sorry, its we who live on average twice as long as our ancestors…

It would be lovely if we could explain away the plethora of chronic and acute illnesses that affect so many people. There is no doubt that in some cases nutritional choice has played a causative or aggravating factor in a person’s ill health. But people who follow very healthy, natural diets also get sick. People who exercise still have heart attacks. The answer is not always simple, nor is it always to be found by glorifying folk remedies or taking complex Oriental classification systems and treatments out of context. Which is not to say there is not some value, for certain things, in either traditional medicine, or folk remedies.

But giving herbal treatments, or folk remedies, the veneer of pseudo science, does not help anyone.

The author of this ebook stated that ‘a number of outstanding authorities’ have proven the ‘therapeutic’ value of using apple cider vinegar for complaints ranging from obesity to arthritis - without naming said authorities. And the chief rationale behind apple cider vinegar’s supposed wide ranging value is that, like apples, it contains Phosphorous, Chlorine, Potassium, Sodium, Magnesium, Calcium, Sulfur, Iron, Fluorine, Silicon, plus many trace elements. And, Potassium.

Now, apple cider vinegar may in fact contain all of these things. It certainly does contain potassium, but only very small amounts - about 15mg per tablespoon as compared to 159mg per apple, or 288mg for 10 rings of dried apple. Cider vinegar has no sodium, no magnesium, and about 1mg of calcium and phosphorus. Hardly noteworthy. But that doesn’t stop the book promoting apple cider vinegar as encouraging the health of veins and capillaries, and therefore heart health and blood pressure. And whilst we’re at it, it helps the blood clot better, though there is no explanation as to this mechanism. By this rationale, tomorrow it will help colonize mars. Presumably in the same mysterious way as it stores the fiber this ebook attributes cider vinegar as having.

But just as apple cider vinegar in fact has no fiber - unlike apples - so cider vinegar is not nearly as miraculous or mysterious as the ebook’s logic. Vinegar may in fact have promise in cleaning without having to resort to harsh chemicals. And in may also be beneficial for some health purposes. But it does not do nearly as much as is claimed. And by creatively linking it to every ailment imaginable, it serves to turn herbal remedies into a bad joke. Mars anyone?

Rebecca Prescott presents practical herbal remedies and naturopathic approaches to health at her website, www.vitaminstohealth.com. Examples include this home remedy for a toothache

Kidney Cancer

Posted in Medical Hall by admin on the February 18th, 2008

Most Who Develop Kidney Cancer are Smokers

Except in rare cases, humans are born with two kidneys. The kidneys are essential organs that we use to get rid of extra water and waste from our blood. Kidneys also help control our blood pressure. Even though humans have two kidneys, we can function normally with just one. However, if both kidneys must be removed, either because of kidney cancer of any other kidney disease, the body cannot function without dialysis. When kidney cancer is found, doctors usually remove the kidney with the cancer and then the patient usually undergoes additional treatment. You can reduce your risk of developing kidney cancer by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and more information and tips are widely available.

What is Dialysis?

You must undergo dialysis treatments if you’ve had both kidneys removed due to kidney cancer or anther disease. Dialysis utilizes a machine that artificially removes waste from your blood stream. There are many potential side effects of using a dialysis machine; however, the benefits outweigh the risks. Dialysis treatment allows a person who has survived kidney cancer or any other kidney disease to live a somewhat normal life.

How is Kidney Cancer Treated?

When kidney cancer is diagnosed, the first step for treatment is usually surgery to remove the kidney(s). After surgery, it is common to treat kidney cancer with radiation, chemotherapy, and/or hormone therapy. Depending on how severe the kidney cancer case is, different variations or combinations of treatments may be used. If a kidney cancer patient is a good candidate, he or she may also receive a kidney transplant.

Who is at Risk?

People who smoke cigarettes or cigars are at a higher risk of developing most types of cancer, including kidney cancer. Also, people who are considered obsess and those who have high blood pressure are also at a greater risk of developing kidney cancer. Males are also more likely to develop kidney cancer, but the reason for this statistic is unknown. There is also a genetic factor that plays a role in who is at risk for developing kidney cancer.

Additional Kidney Cancer Information

There is an endless list of information on kidney cancer available on the Internet. Articles, research papers and medical documents are just a few of the many documents related to kidney cancer available. There are official sites, such as the American Cancer Society, and there are also testimonials from actual kidney cancer patients, both of which discuss causes, treatments, and living with this disease.

Warren and Karen have been involved in the internet for a number of years and run several websites. They are most interested in providing opportunities for people to connect with information relating to business, health and creativity. Check out their Kidney Cancer blog for more information.
