Are Wireless Home Security Systems Really Useful

Posted in Living With Home Improvement, Help + Advice by admin on the June 20th, 2008

Wireless home security systems are based on wireless connections for transmission of signals and images. You can use a variety of devices like television, cell phone or computer to view data collected by these devices .

Basic components of such systems are camera, a transmitter and a receiver. The simplest wireless home security systems are configured using only a computer and a webcam. Complex systems can involve more components and can handle complex applications.

Wireless home security systems have made protecting home and property easy and affordable. There are systems available with plenty of options. Homeowners can customize kits or purchase parts individually and build their own protection. It’s been estimated that more than 50% of all home security surveillance systems purchased are wireless. You can expect this figure to go up what with falling price levels and increasing consumer awareness about utility of wireless systems. You can expect to get discount from insurance companies when you have protected your property with security systems.

Online and retail stores sell wireless home security system kits. Ready kits normally include a control box, door and window contacts, motion sensor, transformer, battery backup, user video and manual, security alert window stickers and technical support.

Optional add-ons for wireless home security systems include latchkey alert. This alert lets parents know when children do not arrive home on time. Exterior sirens, smoke detection sensors, glass break sensors and subscription monitoring services are also available.

You can construct a wireless security system with a webcam and a computer. You can also download open source software from the web to activate motion detection and the option to record images only when something changes. Images are stored on the computer. No doubt this will restrict your cost but also affect performance because range is limited to the reach of the webcam and the webcam cable. Low light can also be a problem.

Homeowners utilizing the power and convenience of wireless technology need to take steps to protect the wireless home security environment. When installing wireless routers and similar equipment, never leave the default names and passwords intact.

Items such as the Linksys wireless router assign a standard name to the wireless network. Anyone who’s used Linksys is familiar with the company’s use of ‘linksys’ as a network name. Changing the name isn’t so much a matter of protecting your network as it is letting lurkers know that you’ve done so.

Your network passwords should be made up of a sequence of letters and numbers and should be difficult to memorise. Yes, they’ll have to be written down. No, others in the neighborhood won’t find it easy to link on the network.

All your wireless connections should be encrypted. If equipment encryption options vary, use the one that all pieces of equipment have in common. This way possibility of unauthorized access to the wireless network will be minimised.

Ensure that the broadcast feature on routers is disabled unless of course you need to broadcast the signal. Make sure firewalls are enabled on both routers and computers. Older routers may not have a firewall option but newer ones do.

If you place routers near windows, it creates a possibility of intrusion, so avoid that. Another measure to avoid intrusion into your signals is putting decals and stickers around your home from outside.

Your house and property will get enhanced security with Wireless home security systems.

Home Security Surveillance Options

Posted in Living With Home Improvement, Help + Advice by admin on the June 13th, 2008

Both hidden and visible cameras form part of Home Security Surveillance. Again, Cameras are available in wired or wireless styles. As far as recording is concerned.

hidden cameras are ideal home security surveillance options. Their small size makes it easy to place almost anywhere and are almost always cost effective. Although hidden cameras can be purchased already hidden - they appear to be plants, clocks, toys, etc. - but can result in poor image quality. If the image cannot be seen, the camera is useless.

Web cams can be visible or hidden. You can use web cams that come along with computers, to monitor a room or a specified area of the house. These cameras are also inexpensive. There is downside in that Potential camera locations are limited by the length of the USB cord unless the camera is a wireless version.

Camera lens determines what images are captured. Dome shaped, wide-angle camera lens produce distortion free images and have a larger field of view than standard camera lens.

Homeowners utilizing cameras for home security surveillance options should consider lighting. For low-light or night light recording, infrared capabilities are required. The infrared gives the camera night vision, resulting in captured surveillance images.

Wireless cameras are available almost everywhere. They are excellent home security surveillance options. There is not much restriction on placement. Homeowners can use as many cameras as necessary to monitor home or property.

IImages can be viewed on cell phones, televisions and the computer. Some hand held gadgets allow viewing of images. You should better ask qualified techies to install wired cameras. Installation can be done while a home is under construction or added later. Adding them later can result in a mess and some expense.

DVR could be a better choice because you will get more footage and more recording and viewing choice. The DVR can be set to capture the image feed from the camera constantly or only when certain actions or events occur. You can use internet for remote viewing of images With all the technological advances made in last few years, you can look for plenty of add ons like Motion sensors, temperature change sensors, lighting change sensors and smoke detection sensors, for your base configuration. The DVR can be set to notify the homeowner should a sensor be activated.

Surveillance and security companies provide a free assessment of your requirements. By answering the questions on the sheet, the homeowner can better determine what kind of security and surveillance is best.

When you are making a decision about Home Security Surveillance, size of the area to be monitored, conditions and budget should be your parameters. You have a choice of signing up for a subscription service from various security companies. Obviously, more popular and larger companies are known to charge high subscription rentals and may require long term contracts as well. Newer providers are becoming available with lower prices. Price should not be the only determining factor when considering a home security company.

You can opt for a very simple Home security surveillance system comprising a laptop plus a web cam or you can go in for an advanced installation.

Saline versus Chlorine - Which is Best For Your Hot Tub or Pool?

Posted in Living With Home Improvement by admin on the March 21st, 2008

All of us know the overpowering smell of a chlorinated pool. I knew it all too well - I was on my high school swim team. I was in the swimming pool twice a day.

If I played any other sport, like basketball, my friends would comment on how it reeked of chlorine - I literally sweated out chlorine! Hey, I would think, at least chlorine is a clean smell. Better to smell like chlorine that body odor, right?

I would have to apply layers of lotion to keep my skin from cracking off! And we would have to wear multiple swimsuits at a time because the chlorine was in a continual process of eating-up the one we were wearing - we needed at least two to be decent.

These days, though, more and more pools owners are switching from chlorine to saline. If you are new to the idea of disinfecting your pool with plain old “salt,” then here is some information to get you up-to-date:

A salt water system in your pool or hot tub works by creating its own chlorine. How does this happen? An electric current is passed through salt water in a chlorinator cell. Basically, a chlorinator cell splits the salt into sodium and chloride. It then releases a chlorine gas that dissolves in the water. It is through this process that the water in a saline pool is sterilized.

Saline not only sterilizes the water, it prevents the growth of algae.

People who have reactions to chlorinated pools are generally reacting not to the chlorine but to other chemicals and by-products. They generally do not have a problem swimming in a saline pool — it is much less irritating on your skin.

Saline is much easier on your eyes than chlorine. You might have assumed that saline would sting your eyes like the salty ocean does. In truth, though, the ocean has a much higher percentage of salt. Saline has very little salt in comparison.

Swimming suits worn solely in saline pools last longer than those worn in chlorinated pools.

Saline feels softer on the skin and does not dry you out as much as chlorine.

The cost of installing a saline system into your pool is high, but in the long run it can be less expensive.

You do not need to deal with expensive and dangerous chemicals when you have a salt-water pool. You only need to add common salt (and you do not even need to add it often, since the pool system recycles the salt). Sometimes you need to add pool acid as well, to balance out the pH levels.
Saline pools are environmentally friendly - no chemicals.

In sum, a salt-water pool is safer, less expensive (in the long run), healthier, and better for the environment. I am starting to think that my high school days on the swim team would have been so much better had we been swimming in a saline pool!

Cars in Carms

Posted in Marketing, Informationer, Living With Home Improvement, Corporate Evangelism by admin on the March 10th, 2008

Running a dealership used to inspire me - buying and selling cars to local people who really benefited as I did. But sometimes it just all gets to me and it feels a little drab. I am unsure whether this is due to secondhand cars playing up for me or just because of the shockingly awful weather in pembrokeshire at the moment. Apparently its almost as bad in the other local counties - maybe everyone just has SAD a bit!!!

Find the Best Freezer for You and Your Family

Posted in Living With Home Improvement by admin on the February 11th, 2008

Freezers are not only a convenience choice; they are an
economical one as well. By purchasing bulk food you can save a
lot of money and ensure that your family never runs out. You can
also store a wide range of products, which will make each of
your meals different from the previous one, thus creating a much
needed diversity. Choosing your freezer model should follow a
few basic guidelines.

First of all, determine which freezer model is the best for your
home. There are two main models to select from: upright freezers
and chest freezers. Vertical (or upright) freezers are a good
choice for smaller families, since their storing capabilities
are not as high as the chest freezer. They provide you with
sufficient space for a lot of food though, and they are
convenient to use. Chest freezers are the ones that are shaped
like a large box and are lined with plastic. They have all sorts
of storage spaces inside the freezer, depending on model and
manufacturer, to ensure you always have the most frequently used
items at hand. Chest freezers are perfect if you have a larger
family of if you plan to deep freeze larger quantities of food
for a longer period of time.

After selecting the freezer type, you can choose from different
available sizes. Most chest freezers are around 15 or 20 cubic
feet and can store over 300 pounds of food. This means that you
can stuff in a lot of food, but just try to keep everything as
organized as possible, since getting out an item in the back of
the freezer might turn into a chilly adventure. The smaller
upright freezers also offer good storing capacities. Such models
have several shelves and compartments for quicker access to your
favorite food items. Frozen fruits are best kept in pull-out
shelves, so look for such a model if you plan on doing this. If
you also store a lot of cans, look for a model that offers
ridged shelves that will stop them from falling around.

Another choice concerns the method of defrost. Manual defrost is
standard for chest freezers - so the freezer actually keeps the
low temperature using humidity. The negative part of manual
defrost is that, once in a while, you have to empty the freezer
and remove the excess ice that was formed. This time-consuming
option is balanced by the fact that such a freezing procedure
actually keeps food fresher and it eliminates freezer burn.
Manual defrost freezers are generally more economical, saving
about 40 percent in electricity costs. With upright freezers you
can choose between manual and frost free options. Frost free
freezers eliminate the need for defrost, but are more energy
demanding and store food in a drier environment.

Mosquito Products: Are They Safe for our Health ?

Posted in Living With Home Improvement by admin on the January 3rd, 2008

There are plenty of mosquito products we can use to get rid of these nasty insects. Some of them are effective some are not. I guess we all own one of these mosquito products at home, but have you ever wondered how they work or are they hazardous for you health? So lets see what kind of mosquito products are out there and how safe they are.

Mosquito products could be classified in two categories based on their purpose. So there are in the first category are the mosquito products that kill the insects and in the second one we’ve got the products that repels mosquitoes. The products grouped in these two categories there are indoor and outdoor mosquito products.

To understand how these mosquito products work we must understand what attracts mosquitoes. So when humans and animals exhale, they give off CO2 (carbon dioxide) and other scents. Mosquitoes have sensors that can detect the presence of these chemicals at a distance of over 100 feet. Once the mosquito picks up the scent, they will immediately change direction and fly rapidly toward the intended victim. So the purpose of mosquito products would be either to attract and kill the insect or to deceive its senses.

In the fist category of mosquito products would be bug zappers and mosquito magnets. An electric bug-zapper works by attracting insects to a central ultraviolet light, surrounded by a lethal electrical grid so when the mosquito touches that grid gets burned. The best in this mosquito products category, would be the old mosquito magnet the most high-tech (and expensive) weapon in the homeowner’s arsenal of mosquito products, made by American Biophysics Corporation. It uses propane to emit carbon dioxide, just as people do, which is one of the things that helps mosquitoes find you. Once mosquitoes are lured to the device, they are sucked into a trap where they dehydrate and die. So these would be about all the mosquito products that have the purpose to lure, trap and kill the mosquitoes.

In the second category of mosquito products are the repellents. They work by blocking the receptors on mosquitoes antennae for the: moisture, warmth CO2 (carbon dioxide) and odor produced by humans that are all attractants for mosquitoes. Even if it is a spray or an ointment the best repellent is DEET.

DEET (diethyl toluamide) was developed in Orlando in the 1950s and contains a synthetic chemical repellent. The mosquito products marketed today contain various concentrations of DEET some of them even to 100 percent witch is not so good for your skin. Mosquito products containing 5 percent to 7 percent DEET keep mosquitoes away for up to 2 1/2 hours.

Citronella, which is also part of this second mosquito products category, is a volatile, liquid oil derived from dried cultivated grasses. It works by repelling animals and insects without harming or killing them. It has a distinctive odor, which also repels certain animals. Oil of Citronella is considered so unlikely to cause harmful effects that some citronella products are exempt from the usual regulation. The mosquito products containing citronella come in the form of candles, cartridges, and rub-on products.

These would be the most important mosquito products available on the market today some of them effective some less effective but I think that the most important thing is weather they are safe for you, your family and your loved ones.

Going Solar - Who is Who?

Posted in Living With Home Improvement by admin on the December 7th, 2007

You’ve made the decision to go with solar energy for your energy needs. In going solar, you need to know who is who. Let’s take a closer look.

Who is Who?

Companies in the solar energy industry come in two main forms. One set provides the systems you need to produce solar energy on your own. A much smaller subset will sell you a form of clean energy.

If you want to skip putting solar panels or shingles on your home, you need to find a company that will sell you power just like a utility. Unfortunately, there isn’t any nation wide company that solely provides solar electricity to customers. If you’re willing to look a bit broader, Green Mountain Energy Company may be for you.

Green Mountain Energy Company is a “cleaner electricity” company. It only buys power produced from wind, solar, biomass, water, geothermal and natural gas. The power is then fed into regional power grids and you tap it from there. The advantage of Green Mountain is you are using cleaner power than a typical utility company, but not completely clean as you find when generating solar power yourself. The biggest downside to Green Mountain is you are still paying utility bills, often more than you would pay to the utility company in your area. That being said, Green Mountain is really the only company of its type.

When people refer to providers, more often they are discussing manufacturers and installers of solar energy systems. In the case of solar energy, there are a few big industry leaders.

BP Solar is one of the largest producers for solar energy solutions for residential, commercial and industrial platforms throughout the world. The company is a true leader in the field and provides simplified solutions for homeowners by combining the sale of solar energy systems with full installation. A very popular company with many homeowners.

Somewhat surprisingly, General Electric is one of the biggest producers of solar energy solutions. The company offers high end commercial solutions and custom made solutions using crystallized silicon solutions. It also offers pre-packaged systems for residential homes.

On the other end of the scale, Uni-Solar is the creator the new solar roof shingles that are gaining popularity with consumers, businesses and government agencies. The shingles sit flat on homes like regular roof shingles, getting rid of the bulky solar panel appearance. The Uni-Solar product is considered a fairly major break through in solar power.

Solar companies come in all types and forms. You can visit our site in the byline of this article to find companies in your area that provide the particular solar solutions you need.

The Many Dimensions of the World of Candles

Posted in Living With Home Improvement by admin on the November 28th, 2007

Candles have been around for many, many years, but it was
not too long ago that candles were just a means of getting some
light in a room when the power went out, and they were a
necessity for such emergencies. Nowadays, the role of candles
has changed. Some are beautiful works of art which it seems a
shame to light, others are a custom scented candle lit and used
for relaxation purposes, with their perfume permeating the air.
Candles are used for decorating rooms, too. The choice is yours,
and you have a wide array of colours and shapes to choose
from.

Nothing says relaxation and romance like a candle lit room. It
seems to make the rest of the world disappear from sight, so you
see only that which is in the candle’s light. This is a good way
to forget the worries of the day, and is an inexpensive way of
doing so too. Give it a try one evening when you feel stressed
and feel the tension disappear in a puff of smoke as you light
your candles.

Candles are available for purchase in a variety of places, from
basic emergency candles in the local hardware stores, to wide
selections in the local dollar store, to beautiful artistic
creations in home decor stores. There are candles for every
occasion too, for Christmas, Valentine’s Day, etc., and for
people with a variety of interests. Some candles have flowers in
them as decoration, others are decorated with shells, or
imitation fish or … there is a lot of choice out there.

Along with the huge variety of candles, and the ability to make
your own custom scented candle, comes an equally large variety
of candle holders. To make the burning of candles as safe as
possible, they need to be in a safe holder, or on a plate or in
a tin, but even so, there are candle holders that appeal to all
sorts of different tastes. There are wall candle holders as well
as candelabras, and numerous glass containers of various shapes
and colours that, provided the candles are inserted properly and
the glass placed on a flat surface, will be safe for you to
burn.

Another advantage of candles, is that you can easily make them
yourself, decorating them, colouring them, and adding essential
oils to make a custom scented candle to help set a certain mood.
Candle making is a good project for a family and a way of making
inexpensive gifts at any time of the year and for any occasion.
You can also make candle gift baskets with the theme, or colour
scheme of your choice.

You can vary your candles too by using soy instead of paraffin
wax, or bees wax for more environmentally friendly candles, or
you can use gel for candles. This is available in many different
colours and shades, and is very effective. Of course you can use
different shaped containers for the wax, tins or jars and you
can decorate them as you see fit. Or you can make floating
candles, using a wide base for the candle to help it float.

The choices for candles are many, but there are advantages to a
custom scented candle. You can make it the shape and colour of
your choice, and with the scent of your choice, or you an use
essential oils to  turn it into an aromatherapy candle. Make
your choice and enjoy!
