What Is FTP And How It Works?
FTP is a method to manage files over the Internet or a
network: meet the File Transfer
Protocol!
People are generally using the FTP for transfering the files
uploaded on their web hosting server. We already talking about
files… trasfer, and most important… protocols.
A protocol is a method which informs your computer about the
connection to a server or client (in a nut shell, tells the
browser how to get the file, how to read the informations about
it, etc).
The FTP is a common process used in file trasfers from
one computer to another: one computer is the server and the
other one is being called - the client (because it connects to
the server).
A server is uploading when sending files, and the client is
downloading them. These are commonly used terms and I believe
you have heard about them before.
To access a FTP server you need an internet or network
connection, a FTP address, a username and a password.
The FTP address of the server is the main thing you must know
before accessing a server. Here is an example: a friend of mine
put some files on his computer and gave me the adress which
looks like this:
target="_blank" rel="nofollow">ftp.myfriendsdomain.com
To access this address, i can use my browser (e.g. Firefox,
Internet Explorer, etc), or a FTP Client (a software for
connecting to FTP servers).
It’s possible the server to be password protected, or I will
connect anonymously using my email address as a password.
Connecting anonymously?
That’s right! If the server is granting acess to everybody, you
will connect anonymously - using anonymous word as username and
your email address as password. But this happens only when you
are allowed to connect anonymously.
In many cases privacy is king. For this reason, the anonymous
connection mode is disabled. You will need a username and
password to establish a connection to that server. The method is
used for protecting different areas on the server.
Clients and browsers?
There is a big difference from connecting to a FTP server using
a browser or a client. In most cases the browser will allow to
connect and download files from a server.
On the other hand, if you are using a FTP client you can:
download, upload, delete files, etc.
FTP vs. HTTP
Accessing a server using the HTTP (Hyper Text Trasfer
Protocol) is commonly used for websites. If you will access
www.cnn.com
with your browser, you got yourself a quick HTTP connection.
Let me show you two major differences between FTP and HTTP:
1) When connecting to a FTP server you are using a FILE server
(that means you can’t see anything but files there), but if you
connect to a HTTP server you access a WEB server, which means
you can load web pages into a browser.
2) Using a FTP connection you can download and upload files to
the server, but when you use the HTTP connection you can only
download content from the Internet for viewing, is a “read only”
method.
Another thing you can do with the FTP method is to change mode
of the files. Why? Because you might use certain files that need
different permissions.
For example I have a small web application which stores your
name and email address inside a file on the server. If that file
is write protected, I can’t store any information. I need to
change it’s writing permission. This step is also called
chmod-ing a file.
What is CHMOD?
The chmod command is used to change permissions of a file
using the File Trasfer Protocol.
After you’ve uploaded something on a server you might want to
set up the file permissions. For example: the owner can change
the file’s content, but any visitor comming here can only read
it.
This is done using 3 simple commands: write, read, execute.
Every command can be assigned (in the same time or dispersed)
for owner, groups and anyone else.
Sometimes the chmod commands are hard to use and understand, but
now it’s easier, thanks to the three digit numbers!
Here are the most used commands for chmod-ing a file:
CHMOD 644 The file can be read by: owner, groups and
everyone else, but can’t be changed, or executed but other
people excepting the owner.
CHMOD 700 The file can be read, written and excuted by
the owner (user). The groups and everyone else can’t read, write
or execute it.
CHMOD 755 The owner, the group and everyone else can read
and execute the file, but only the owner can write it. (this is
a very common option for chmoding a file because allows the
execution of a file - it’s valuable for web applications).
CHMOD 777 Full access to everyone for reading, executing
or writing the data.
Fact: FTP is used mostly for uploading files to a web
hosting server! Webmasters are using this procedure to put
websites online for their visitors.

Affiliates Catch the Wave.
Counting Mike Filsaime, I had at least 10 other marketers write
to me about ‘Butterfly Marketing.’ They were really jumping on
the band wagon.
Was it because of Mike’s incredible marketing tactics?
Absolutely yes, 100%, but this isn’t just a 100% answer. There
is a lot more to it if we look at it.
The second 100% takes a little looking at how the marketing
endeavors of Mike’s affiliates went. I didn’t get a single offer
where an affiliate was just offering ‘Butterfly Marketing’ by
itself. People were throwing everything into the package except
their first born.
I have never seen anything like it, but talk about wise
marketing. Now they could ride the wave that Mike created and
make it even more appealing to the potential customer.
So they end up getting more sales from people who were riding
the fence by tipping them with their added bonuses.
Now on top of the money they make, they have created a new list
of people who really seem to have pretty large pockets for
buying good marketing material.
This can mean many $1000’s per year. Imagine if you only have a
list of 10 or 15 people who will buy high priced top quality
marketing products. And you make them one big expensive offer
per month and only buy each month. An extra 2 to 5 thousand
dollars per month would kind of come in handy for most of us. ![]()
Upon further investigation, I realized that some of these
affiliates were offering bonus packages that weren’t even
theirs. And I know that they were not resale rights products.
The first thought that ran through my mind is ‘These guys are
boot leggers,’ but no, that’s not it. These guys are actually
very professional.
So here is what I concluded. A couple of marketers would get
together to do a promo. I don’t know the logistics of how they
set this up, as in whether it would be a split or what, but by
doing this they could make those huge bonus offers and perhaps
snag people who would have bought from someone else.
Even if the person who went in with the affiliate got no part of
the cash, they could offer a product for free and get the names
of that person’s list, and he, too, could share the list of the
big buyers. This is true Joint Venturing at its best.
My hat is off to these ingenious guys and gals. I wish I had
thought of it.
I can tell you I will try not to miss the boat next time it
comes around, and the really cool thing about the net is that
the boat will come around again and it won’t be long.
In my next article we are going to give our best shot at Trying
to figure out what ‘Butterfly Marketing’ is.
So you bought yourself a new PC!
So you bought a new PC for yourself or a relative during the holidays. There was the initial excitement about its speed and the nice screen – and then it came time to actually get it running. Which meant embarking on some real work -– downloading a browser, a couple of multimedia players, a PDF reader, a toolbar, and maybe something for voice and instant messaging. Don’t forget the anti-spyware and anti-virus apps – you’ve got to have those. Hours, maybe even days, go by. How many wizards have you clicked through, not to mention license agreements and preference pickers? And then you have to ask: did I get everything? And how am I going to keep all of this up to date?
This has been my experience too many times. I wanted to simplify the project. This led me to Google and Google Pack– a one-stop software package that helps you discover, install, and maintain a wide range of essential PC programs. It is easier for everyone. And it’s free.
It downloads in minutes and installs in just a few clicks. There’s only one license agreement – and no wizards. And there’s a tool called the Google Updater that keeps all the software in the Google Pack current. Even if you already have some of the software in the Pack, you can use the Google Updater to update and manage it.
And now the question for you is: what will you do with all that time you’ve saved?

Website Optimisation & Design: Which Screen Resolution to Design for?
It is at times a common mistake for web designers, especially
beginners, to create a website which is not optimised for
various screen resolutions. With over 40 different screen
resolutions, it is extremely important to optimise your web
pages for the most popular screen resolutions so that your web
pages can be viewed by a greater number of online visitors.
Here are some basic facts to consider when designing for screen
resolutions:
- 800×600 is the minimum resolution offered on most PCs and
notebooks. 800×600 is also the preferred viewing option for 14%
of internet users.
- The most popular resolutions used by approximately 60% of
online users is 1024 x 768, followed by 1280×1024 and other
resolutions, with 26% of internet users.
Designing for a wide spectrum of resolutions is therefore
essential. But how is this achieved?
The process of designing for all resolutions is achieved through
a “lowest-to-highest” resolution technique. Which ever image
editing or web building application you are using, it is
important to set your working area or table width to a
resolution within 800 x 600. A suitable area of 770 x 560 is
recommended for best viewing in a web browser on a 800 x 600
screen resolution. This recommended area will not only alleviate
horizontal page scrolling but will keep your pages user friendly
and easy to read.
Designing web pages for all resolutions is especially useful for
attracting and keeping visitors for a longer period of time on
your site. Easy to use and read websites are always more likely
to attract customers. A poorly designed and structured website
with irritable horizontal scrolling will only drive away
visitors and potential buyers.
Top Ten Ways to Convert Web Site Browsers to Buyers
Does this scenario ring a bell? You worked hard to get traffic to your web site. You watched your visitor rate climb higher and higher. Congratulations! But wait, your visitors are leaving empty-handed. They are virtually leaving without buying. You may be making some simple mistakes that send your visitors away empty-handed, without buying.
Many service business owners, infopreneurs and writers fail to sell online. In fact researchers say only 3% of online e-tailers actually sell anything to speak of. You may be making the same top mistakes in web sales copy that 97% of online e-tailers make. Put these top conversion tips into practice and enter the 3% winners’ circle that sell online:
1) Create a signature file to soft-sell. Put your power-packed signature file at the bottom of each email you send. It will soft-sell your business each time you contact someone via email. Be sure to develop different signature files for different promotions. Use each one to drive targeted visitors to your business website.
2) Know the one sentence version of your “mission statement” to attract new targeted clients online. Remember prospects don’t buy your education or career titles, they want to know what’s in it to help them. Place that one sentence as the second line of your signature file. For example, “Helps service business owners and writers write their best book now!”
3) Create a sales letter. Plant an evergreen sales letter for each main service category and product that sells for you 24/7. Flash, media shows and cutesy components to your website all can look good but they don’t sell for you. Only words can do that. Write a compelling sales letter to convince your prospect to buy.
4) Offer testimonials. People like to buy what someone else has already taken the risk for, bought and liked. It is perceived as less of a risk by your prospect to read about previous customer experiences. So post your testimonials and convert more visitors to buyers.
5) Update Your Content. If your website is static (non-changing) then it will not entice your audience to visit again. Unless your site’s purpose is to get a direct response, it should have regular content changes. Create a target newsletter for your audience. Send it out regularly to build trust with your visitors. Consistency builds trust. People like to know what to expect.
If you are serious about making your website a more effective marketing tool or converting more visitors into customers, begin by putting the top ten online marketing strategies into place. Even one or all of the principles at work will help make your website one that your visitors will buy from, proudly refer, and come back to over and over again. Write compelling copy and prosper.

Broadband Speeds
Broadband speed can be compared to a broad highway through which traffic moves smoothly at great speed, without any road blocks, breaks, delays or other hassles. You reach your destination straightaway without loss of time and conduct your business expeditiously. Internet broadband is similar to the breadth and smoothness of a well-designed highway, in that it enables the transfer of data instantly with a click of the mouse.
The move from dialup to broadband can also be understood by comparing it to the telephone system itself. In the old telephone system, a caller had to try connecting again and again - and then reconnect if the call did not go through due to disturbance on the line, or if the line was snapped altogether. The old-timers can very well recall the frustration in such situations - especially when some important communication was to being attempted.
It takes pretty long time to upload and download a file using a dialup modem with a speed of 28Kb/per sec, but with a broadband connection the same file can be transferred in a matter of seconds. This has become possible because the bandwidth allows for a speed in the range of 256 Kb/second to 10Mb/second. There is obviously a great gap between 28Kb/sec and 10Mb/sec. The magnitude of the difference in transmission speed can be easily understood if you know that one kilobit is equal to one thousand bits and one megabit is equal to one million bits, where a bit is the smallest unit of information.
There is one more simple technical point to be said in context of the broadband speed. There is an asymmetry between the speed at which a file is uploaded from your computer to the Internet and the speed at which it is downloaded from the Internet to your computer. It takes a longer time to upload a file and a much shorter time to download it. It is much like climbing upstairs and coming downstairs. Usually an average Internet user downloads more data than he uploads. Symmetric connections, in which upload and download speeds are the same, are available. However, symmetric connections are usually more expensive than asymmetric connections.
Broadband provides detailed information on Broadband, Broadband Phones, Broadband Speeds, Broadband Internet and more. Broadband is affiliated with Broadband Satellite Internet.
Solving a Spyware Intrusion
Spyware is a frequently occurring problem for all internet users
today and its threats continue to multiply. When you download
freeware, shareware or other types of file sharing software you
are usually also allowing in spyware applications.
Whether it is adware, malware, Trojans or pop up ads spyware is
following and recording your personal and usage information then
sending it out to intruders. Even with highly secure firewalls
or anti-virus programs your system is vulnerable to spyware
because it sneaks past these securities by piggybacking on
downloads you authorize.
Once in your system spyware will slow the rate at which your
computer works, making it difficult to use as the infection
grows and continues to run. Your browser or even your entire
system will crash because spyware is running. This can ruin
important information and the computer system.
Spyware monitors and records your usage and internet browsing
habits then relays the information to the intruder. Some forms
are capable of hijacking your credit card, social security
number and password information.
If the intruder does not directly utilize the information stolen
they will usually sell it to other individuals or companies that
will use the information at their discretion. To get rid of this
malicious software and avoid more serious infections Lavasoft
has a spyware tool that scans for a variety of types of spyware.
Lavasoft has spyware tools in several different forms to be used
on personal and commercial or company computers. The software
can detect and effectively fix or remove spyware infections to
restore your computer’s functioning capabilities and your
privacy. Lavasoft’s spyware tools have become some of the most
popularly used and proven to be highly effective for all types
of computer users.
Modified Cars do 300mph
Its not big news that you can tune a toyota supra to do 200mph, that was done years ago. But today someone has managed to tune a bugatti veyron to speeds of over 300 mph.
Mentalist you might say, not something you would find in your local modified cars for sale car lot, but yes this car is likely a one off, with gt styling added to the already very aerodynamic bugatti veyron bodyshell and weight stripped this car is priceless as well as completely insane. I wonder if they will let me drive it?
Its said it will only achieve such speeds on open tarmac and that it is not really a cruisable speed on a main road - no shi*!!!!
Can’t wait till a mondeo can do 300+!!!!
