Classical Music Online

Posted in Better Music by admin on the October 20th, 2008

When our classical music radio station in Detroit closed down, I was absolutely devastated. Here I was, in a major city, and there was no way for me to listen to classic music on the radio in the car. Most cities had two classical stations at least, and at one point Detroit had as well. Don’t get me wrong - public radio still played a lot of classical composers, but only during certain programs. Much of the time, I would have to bring my own CDs with me if I wanted to hear classical compositions.

That is why it was so overjoyed when I discovered classical music online. I have never really studied classical music history very much, and I don’t know the music that well. All I know is that I like it. That is why it is nice for me to have a DJ to play it for me. I don’t really have to think about it. I can just sit back and let the music wash over me. Classical music radio was great for that, but online radio stations are also good.

Of course, even if you are a more knowledgeable classical fan, you can still find what you need online. There are plenty of classical music downloads out there that a lot of my friends take advantage of. This is an especially good way to find the works of new composers. A lot of art music composers are absolutely desperate to find fans nowadays. They are perfectly willing to make their performances available for free in hopes that you will become familiar with their works and want to see them live. They put their classical music online and spread the word as far as they can. The only difficulty is finding out about these artists.

That is where Internet streaming radio comes in. A lot of online Internet Djs make it their business to be extremely knowledgeable about current trends in music and entertainment. They will point you to some of the hottest musicians in whatever genre interests you. A lot of people don’t expect classical music online to be so fertile, but it really is. It seems that nowadays whenever a genre loses popularity in the outside world, it finds refuge on the Internet. Classical music online is no exception. Whether you are into the works of the Romantic period, the high classical composers, or more modern art music, you can find it on the Internet.

1959 Stratocaster Vintage Guitars

Posted in Better Music by admin on the March 14th, 2008

Mid 1959 Stratocaster vintage guitars have a slab
rosewood fingerboard with white “clay” position
dots. The fingerboard radius of this Fender guitar
is 7.25″. The bottom fingerboard is flat. Vintage
Fender Stratocasters made July 1959 and after
basically will have rosewood fingerboards. The
neck now has a very thin “D” backshape, by the
end of 1959 it gets even thinner.

Stratocaster vintage Fender guitars from mid-1959
have a celluloid “mint green” three layer pickguard
which is white/black/white. Sometimes the pickguard
of this vintage Fender is called a “nitro” pickguard.
The celluloid pickguard was first introduced to the
Stratocaster guitar around July 1959. Before that,
rosewood fingerboard vintage Stratocasters were
made with a single white pickguard with 9 or 10
screws.

During the same time period in 1959 some vintage
Fender Stratocaster guitars were made with maple
neck and a 8 screw three layer celluloid pickguard.
In order to replace the thicker and much smaller
shield previously used on guitars single layer
pickguards, a thin aluminum shield the size of the
pickguard was installed underneath the three layer
pickguard.

Fender used a very photo-reactive dye in their sunburst
finish of the vintage Stratocaster guitar. This caused
many 1959 Strats to fade from 3-color sunburst to
a 2-color. The photo-reactive nature of the red on the
Strat Fender guitar caused fading from ultra-violet light. The fading is noticeable up close,
from a distance it is difficult to recognize.

Goodbye My Friend the Juke Box. A Fond Remembrance Of The History And Future Of The Juke Box.

Posted in Better Music by admin on the January 13th, 2008

Can the traditional Juke Box remain in the digital and MP3 world? The MP3 Jukebox is a available in many forms and expressions but still the traditional Juke Box survives.

Juke Box styling came along from the crude wooden boxes in the early 1930s to brilliant lighted displays with plastic and color animation of the Rudolf Wurlitzer 850 Peacock juke box of the early 40’s. Regrettably once the USA government entered into the 2nd world war, metal ore as well as plastic were required for the war effort.

Music juke box output was cut back. The 1943 Wurlitzer 950 juke box sported wooden coin slides to conserve on alloy. It should also be noted that because the juke box mechanisms were made of metal, they weren’t manufactured during this era, instead, an untested console was developed and the internal parts of the juke box were positioned inside it. Since most of the internal workings were assembled by hand, many of these juke boxes had components which never fit the right way and involved adjustment.

The 1943 Wurlitzer Victory juke box had glass lit panels instead of plastic. After the war, materials were available once again and there was a great growth in juke box manufacturing. The Rudolf Wurlitzer “1015-Bubbler” juke box symbolises the look and is arguably the hottest juke box styling of all time. Many of of these lived on into the 1950’s in active use and are forever associated with the fifties in pop music culture despite their 40s origin, as their unique visual prominence and production volume.

After the ’40s, the juke box trends in general went more three-dimensional and “hi-tech” in their look, distancing themselves from traditional juke box looks such as ancient Grecian, renaissance, and Gothic architecture designs noticed in the ‘forties model juke boxes.

Music juke boxes from the forties came to be known as Golden Age because of the yellow catalin plastic. Music juke boxes from the fifties are called Silver Age because of the overriding chromium-plate design. With the ascension of fast food diners in the 1960’s, eateries wanted to get clients in and out fast.

Today, the diner juke box has been replaced by other sorts of amusemententertainment media, yet when you go to a place that still has a juke box, young and old are still attracted to their almost garish styling. The juke box as a mass media device may be dying yet the nostalgia is something that may never leave us.

    MySpace Music Goes Strong

Posted in Internet Social Resources, Better Music, A Life Of Leisure by admin on the August 2nd, 2007

Only years ago, it was hard to believe a concept like MySpace Music would exist. But then again, technology of tomorrow cannot be comprehended today. In recent times, we have been seeing a huge gathering at MySpace and equivalent sites. And it shows no signs of easing up. So what does “MySpace Music” mean to most of us? Well for starters, it’s a place to get the word out on your own unique blend of music and playing. You can easily DJ live for an online audience and get instant feedback on your music. In the past it was a lot harder. We had to book a spot in a club and patiently wait our turn. Now it can be done very easily from the comforts of our own home.

MySpace is definitely here to stay, and musicians and DJ’s are thankfully for the opportunities it brings to their live music.

    Sansamp Bass DI

Posted in Better Music by admin on the May 25th, 2007

I once read an article where some big boy engineer guy who had
his name on a a couple number one hits back in the mid 80s
stayed busy for years based entirely off a bass sound he nailed
on some Peter Gabriel song. He said that everyone wanted him to
engineer their recordings because they wanted that bass sound.

The ironic thing about the situation is the engineer admits now
that he did nothing different on that bass sound than he had on
the numerous other records he had done. Of course, no one cared
much about the bass sound on the other records. It turns out
that the only change in the equation was the song and the
player. The engineer said that this one particular bass player
just sounds that damn good. He has magic hands and no one else
    comes close.

This takes me to my review of the Sansamp Bass DI. I bought this
pedal about the same time I bought my first microphone, so I’ve
had it for years and years. Before I get into it’s tone, I must
say that bass is something that totally eludes me. Maybe it’s
just my guitar player instinct, but I never seam to record a
bass sound that impresses me all that much. I’m not sure what
the problem is, but more than likely the answer to my question
was in the first two paragraphs of this article.

I wanted to blame my recording gear such as the Sansamp Bass DI
for me not achieving a bass sound that I really liked. However,
I’m starting to think that this is not the case. I read the
forums where the big dogs hang out. Someone once asked about the
Sansamp Bass DI. I was amazed at how many people truly loved it.
I’m talking about engineers who had 20 platinum records on their
wall. These guys usually refute anything that’s not $3,000 but
it seamed that no one had anything negative to say about the
    Sansamp Bass DI. Impressive.

So I sat down one day to play with my Sansamp. To be honest, I
never played with the knobs too much on this pedal. I guess it’s
a little ridiculous, but I just haven’t learned what truly
sounds good on a bass. I think the biggest problem with my bass
sounds (besides the variety of bass players) has been the
quality of the basses. Almost every bass that I record with a DI
has this over the top, unusable low end that just sounds like
crap. While a few bass sounds do make the subs in the car go to
town, I find that most of the time, the bass sound is up above
the subwoofer level. It’s in the low mids region.

I’ve been experimenting with knocking out a ton of the lows with
the Sansamp and I’m getting closer to what I’m looking for. The
tone controls on the Sansamp really do seam to do something
cool. They do offer a lot of flexibility. I find it easier in my
brain to twist a few knobs on a pedal to extreme settings ( if
necessary) than I do using a parametric eq plugin.

So for me, I can’t give the Sansamp a tremendous review.
Honestly, I can’t give a review at all right now. I’ve not hit
the bass sound that I’m looking for, but I’m going to keep
trying until I find it. I’m not sure that the Sansamp is the
cause or the blame for the this.

With that being said, the best bass sound I’ve ever gotten was
done with a very good bass player with a very good bass. We ran
him straight into a Vintech 1272 preamp and it did sound
excellent. For whatever reason the Vintech preamp did sound much
better than the Presonus M80 I was using. The difference was
night and day. It’s very possible that the preamp you use the
Sansamp DI with could make a huge difference in tone. I think
the big engineers like it because it has all the knobs right
there so they can fool with them as they choose.
